Safe Driving For Life
Q. In total, how many lessons will it take to pass my test?
A. The Driving Standards Agency says that on average it is 40, however, different people learn at different speeds.
Q. What is the minimum age that I can start to learn to drive a car on public roads?
A. To start learning to drive you need to be at least 17 years old, which is the minimum age that you can legally drive a car on public roads in the UK. There's been some speculation about raising the minimum age to 18, but this is under review by the Government and no decision has yet been made.
Of course, if you're not yet 17 and want to start practising on private land, that's ok, but remember that places like supermarket car parks are classed as public roads.
If you want to start learning to drive on private land, the site you have access to must be gated and remote from all public highways. However, if the land is connected to any form of public highway, then, irrespective of its ownership, it is illegal under the Road Traffic Act for any under age or unlicensed learner to drive there.
You can also get ahead by applying for your provisional licence three months before your 17th birthday. If you're disabled and receiving mobility allowance, you can start at age 16. apply for your provisional licence quickly and easily online
Q. Will I need an eyesight test?
A. There's a minimum standard for driving so it's worthwhile to check that your eyesight is ok. Make sure that you can read a car number plate from the minimum distance. If you need glasses or contact lenses, that's ok, but you must wear them whenever you drive and, of course, when you take your test.
You must be able to read an old-style number plate in good daylight from a distance of 20.5 metres (that's 67 feet, or about five car lengths). The distance for the new-style number plates introduced in September 2001 is 20 metres (66 feet). Our instructors will check your eyesight before you begin driving, so if you are not sure, see an optician first.
Q. What documentation do I need to start driving?
A. You will need a valid provisional driving licence before you begin driving. If it is the old style (just a paper licence) it must be signed & accompanied by some form of photo identification. If it is the new style you will need both the plastic photographic card and the paper counterpart.
Q. What car do I drive on the driving test?
A. You will usually drive the same vehicle as the one you have learnt in (or one similar in exceptional circumstances).
Q. How long is the driving test?
A. The driving test will last approximately 35 to 40 minutes
Q. When should I start studying for my theory test?
A. The sooner the better. You don't have to study before you take to the road but it helps as the more you know before you start driving the less time it will take to learn.
